ID Photo Requirements: Passport, Visa, and Government ID Sizes Explained
Different countries and document types have strict photo requirements. Here's a complete reference for the most common ID photo standards.
Getting an ID photo rejected because of the wrong size or background is frustrating and costly โ especially when you're applying for a passport or visa and every day counts. This guide covers the exact requirements for the most common ID and travel document photo standards.
Why ID photo requirements are so strict
Biometric ID systems used at border crossings, passport control, and identity verification checkpoints rely on facial recognition software that compares the applicant's live face to their document photo. For this software to work accurately, photos must be taken under standardized conditions โ consistent size, framing, lighting, and background. Photos that don't meet requirements are rejected not arbitrarily, but because the biometric systems genuinely can't process them reliably.
US Passport (2ร2 inch)
Dimensions: 2ร2 inches (51ร51 mm) โ equivalent to 600ร600 pixels at 300 DPI.
Head size: The head (top of hair to bottom of chin) must occupy 1 inch to 1โ inches of the photo height.
Background: Plain white or off-white. No patterns, shadows, or other people visible.
Expression: Neutral expression or natural smile. Both eyes must be open.
Glasses: Not permitted in US passport photos as of 2016. Remove glasses before taking the photo.
Head covering: Not permitted unless for documented religious reasons. Must not obscure the face.
Recency: Must be taken within the last 6 months.
Common rejection reasons: Wrong background color, head too small or too large in the frame, visible glasses, poor lighting causing shadows on the background or face, printed on paper that is too thin (use photo paper, not plain printer paper).
US Visa (2ร2 inch)
Requirements are essentially identical to US passport photos: 2ร2 inches, white or off-white background, neutral expression, no glasses, head between 1 inch and 1โ inches.
For specific visa types (student, work, tourist), check the instructions with your particular application โ some consulates have additional requirements.
UK and Schengen/EU Passport (35ร45 mm)
Dimensions: 35 mm wide ร 45 mm tall. At 300 DPI this is approximately 413ร531 pixels.
Head size: The head must fill 70โ80% of the frame height, measured from the top of the head (not the hair) to the chin.
Background: Plain light grey or cream. Not white. The subject's clothing should contrast with the background โ avoid white or very light shirts.
Expression: Neutral, facing directly forward. Mouth closed.
Glasses: Not permitted for UK biometric passports. EU requirements vary by country โ check with your specific national passport authority.
Lighting: Even lighting with no shadows on the face or background.
Eyes: Must be fully open, clearly visible, and looking directly at the camera.
Canadian Passport (35ร45 mm)
Dimensions: 35 mm ร 45 mm โ the same physical size as UK/EU passports.
Head size: 31โ36 mm from chin to crown of head.
Background: Plain white background.
Expression: Neutral expression, eyes open and clearly visible, looking straight at camera.
Notable requirement: A second copy of the same photo must be provided with the guarantor's signature on the back. Canada requires two identical prints.
Philippine Passport (4ร6 cm)
Dimensions: 40 mm ร 60 mm (4 cm ร 6 cm). At 300 DPI this is approximately 472ร709 pixels. The Philippine Statistics Authority specifies the photo is placed in the upper portion of the application form.
Background: White background.
Expression: Neutral, facing directly forward.
Attire: White shirts are not permitted as they blend with the background.
Philippine NBI and Government IDs (1ร1 and 2ร2)
The Philippines uses two photo sizes widely across government-issued ID documents:
1ร1 inch (25ร25 mm): Used for NBI clearance, postal ID, and various government forms.
2ร2 inch (51ร51 mm): Used for many LTO, SSS, Pag-IBIG, PhilHealth, and UMID documents.
Both require a white background and a neutral expression facing the camera directly.
India Passport (35ร35 mm)
Dimensions: 35 mm ร 35 mm square. At 300 DPI this is approximately 413ร413 pixels.
Background: Plain white.
Head size: Face must occupy 70โ80% of the frame.
Expression: Neutral, both eyes open.
Australia Passport (35ร45 mm)
Dimensions: 35 mm ร 45 mm.
Background: Plain light-colored or white.
Head size: 32โ36 mm from chin to crown.
General rules that apply almost everywhere
Regardless of specific country requirements, virtually all government ID photos require:
- 1No hats or head coverings (except for documented religious reasons where the face remains fully visible).
- 2No sunglasses or tinted lenses. Regular prescription glasses are permitted in some countries but not others โ check your specific requirements.
- 3No filters or digital alterations to the face. The photo must be a true representation of your current appearance.
- 4Recent photo โ typically within the last 6 months for most passports and visas.
- 5Printed on photo paper, not plain printer paper. Plain printer paper curls, fades, and is rejected.
- 6No visible pixelation or blurriness. The photo must be in focus.
Making your own ID photos
Using BG Bueno's ID Photo Maker, you can:
- 1Upload a portrait photo taken against a plain background.
- 2Select the standard size for your document (US Passport, PH Passport, UK/EU, Canadian, and more, or enter custom dimensions).
- 3Adjust the crop to center your face correctly using the zoom and position sliders.
- 4Set the background color (white, light gray, or blue are common requirements).
- 5Download a single photo or a print-ready sheet with multiple copies arranged for printing.
Take the downloaded file to a print shop and print on 4R photo paper. The cost is typically far less than going to a dedicated photo studio.
Important: Always verify the current requirements with the issuing authority before submitting any official document application. Requirements change, and what was accepted two years ago may not be accepted today.
