How to Make a Background Transparent and Save as PNG

A transparent background lets your image work on any surface — website, presentation, or print. Here's everything you need to know about creating and using transparent PNGs.

A transparent background is one of the most useful properties an image can have. It means the subject — a logo, a product, a person — floats cleanly on whatever surface it's placed on, without a white or colored box around it. Here's how to create transparent background images and use them correctly.

What is a transparent background?

Standard image formats like JPG don't support transparency. Every pixel in a JPG has a color — including the background pixels. When you place a JPG on a colored surface, the original background color shows as a box around the subject.

PNG (and WEBP) support an alpha channel — a fourth data channel alongside red, green, and blue. The alpha value of each pixel determines how opaque it is, from fully transparent (invisible) to fully opaque (solid). A PNG with a transparent background has background pixels with an alpha value of zero, meaning they're completely invisible when the image is placed on any surface.

How to create a transparent background

Method 1: AI background removal (fastest)

For photographs with a clear subject — a person, product, animal, or object — AI background removal is by far the fastest method. BG Bueno's AI Background Remover processes the image in seconds and outputs a PNG with a fully transparent background.

  1. 1Upload your JPG, PNG, or WEBP image.
  2. 2The AI identifies the foreground subject and removes the background.
  3. 3Download the result as a PNG with transparency.

This works best when the subject has clear edges against a contrasting background. Hair, fur, and transparent objects are the most challenging cases.

Method 2: Manual removal in Photoshop or GIMP

For complex images or when you need precise control:

In Photoshop:

  1. 1Open your image.
  2. 2Use the Magic Wand, Quick Selection, or Pen tool to select the background.
  3. 3Press Delete to remove it. The checkerboard pattern indicates transparency.
  4. 4Export as PNG: File → Export → Export As → PNG.

In GIMP (free):

  1. 1Open your image: File → Open.
  2. 2Add an alpha channel: Image → Flatten Image first, then Layer → Transparency → Add Alpha Channel.
  3. 3Use Fuzzy Select or Free Select to select the background.
  4. 4Delete (Edit → Clear).
  5. 5Export as PNG: File → Export As → choose PNG.

Method 3: PowerPoint or Keynote

For simple images with a solid-color background:

  1. 1Insert the image into a slide.
  2. 2Select it → Picture Format (PowerPoint) or Format → Instant Alpha (Keynote).
  3. 3Click the background color to remove it.
  4. 4Right-click → Save as Picture → PNG.

This is a quick method for logos or graphics with flat, consistent backgrounds — not suitable for photographs.

Saving correctly as PNG

The format matters. After removing the background, you must save or export as PNG — not JPG. JPG does not support transparency and will fill transparent areas with white.

  • •In Photoshop: File → Export → Export As → PNG, or File → Save As → PNG.
  • •In GIMP: File → Export As → filename.png.
  • •In online tools including BG Bueno: the download button always outputs PNG.

Checking that transparency is real

A common mistake is saving an image that looks like it has a transparent background but actually has a white background instead. To check:

  1. 1Open the PNG in a browser or image viewer.
  2. 2If the background appears white, check whether the background is actually white pixels (no transparency) or a white webpage behind a transparent image.
  3. 3The reliable way to check: open the PNG in Photoshop or GIMP and look for the checkerboard pattern behind the subject. Checkerboard = transparent. Solid white = not transparent.

Using transparent PNGs in common contexts

Websites (HTML/CSS):

Transparent PNGs work natively. Just use an <img> tag — the browser renders the transparent areas as see-through against whatever is behind the image.

Canva and design tools:

Upload your transparent PNG and it will float cleanly over any background. You can then place it on colored cards, photos, or gradients without any background box.

PowerPoint and Google Slides:

Insert the transparent PNG as an image. It will sit cleanly over slide backgrounds without a white box — useful for logos and icons in presentations.

Word documents:

Insert the PNG and use "Wrap Text → In Front of Text" to position it freely. The transparent areas show the document background through.

Print (business cards, flyers, packaging):

Send the PNG to your designer or print vendor. Professional print software handles PNG transparency correctly. Always confirm the file has actual transparency (checkerboard in Photoshop) before sending to print.

Common mistakes

Saving as JPG after removing the background. The most common mistake. Always save as PNG when transparency is needed.

Not checking edge quality. Zoom into the edges of your subject after background removal. Look for fringing — leftover pixels from the original background color that appear as a faint halo. AI tools sometimes leave slight fringing, especially around fine hair.

Using PNG for photographs where transparency isn't needed. PNG produces very large files for photographs. If you don't need transparency, use JPG or WEBP and save significant file size.
